Walker Thadius Hawkins, also known as "Thad", a horse lover, faithful husband, loving father and grandfather passed away in peace on August 8, 2016 at the age of 81 in his home. He was born in Starkville, Mississippi, a resident of Central/Zachary for over 49 years, a veteran of the Marines, and a retired welder with Locals 198 and 798.
He had a life-long love affair with training race horses, cornbread and buttermilk, a bowl of ice-cream nightly, his mother-n-law's homemade fried peach pies and canned fig preserves. He loved playing dominoes and square dancing with his best friends and believed he could fix anything with a clothes hanger and a roll of duct tape.
He also took pride in his service during the Korean War, serving the rank of Sergeant.
He is survived by his wife, Norma, of 58 years; his 2 daughters, Tracy Lozes, Sharman Brister and son-in-law, Phillip Brister; 4 grandchildren, Davis Wascom, Brooks Lozes, Tyler Lozes and Presley Wascom; 3 sisters Dixie Hicks, Jackie Lasseigne, and Charlotte Austin; 3 close friends, Charles "Bubba" and Dorothy Middleton and James Kidd; as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his Mother and Father, Ruby and Bill Hawkins, brother Jimmy Hawkins and sister Sherry Burton.
His family will hold a memorial service to celebrate his life and cherish the memories on Thursday, August 11 at 11:00 a.m.
Visitation will be held at Baker Funeral Home, 6401 Groom Road, Baker LA 70714, Wednesday, Aug 10 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Thursday, August 11 from 9:00 a.m. until the memorial service at 11:00 a.m. Services will be officiated by Pastor Wayne Austin. Graveside service and burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens.
