A resident of Baker, and a retired estimator with Turner Industries, he passed away from C.O.P.D. on Thursday, June 21, 2012 at his sons home in Brownsfield. He was 83, a native of Martin, Tennessee, and a US Army Veteran, having served in the 82nd Airborne Division, Parachute Infantry. Visiting at Baker Funeral Home, 6401 Groom Road, Baker, on Sunday, June 24, 2012 from 59pm, and on Monday, June 25, 2012 from 8am until religious services in the chapel at 10am, conducted by Rev. Paul R. Downing. Interment to follow in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. Survived by wife, Betty Bankston Smith Downing a daughter, Tammie K. Downing three sons and daughtersinlaw, Robert D. Bob and Pam Harris Downing, Paul R. and Danni Magee Downing, and Eric W. and Pam Collins Downing three bonus daughters, Bettys children, Bobbie Jo Smith, Melinda Michiels, and Noupie Normand four sisters, Mary Downing Rovena, Mae Downing Christian, Sue Downing Seguin, and Judi Downing Persick brother, John D. Dudley Downing 10 grandchildren, Kathryne Downing and husband Ryan Hart, Kiera Downing, John Wesley Downing, Melissa and husband Randy Richard, Melanie Winterton, Amy and husband Jeff Henderson, Heather Downing, Paul Downing Jr, Andy Downing, and Miriam Downing four great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his first wife of 54 years, Marjorie Castello Downing his parents, John R. and Thelma Downing his second mother, Lillie Mae Downing brother R. Edwin Downing and a bonus daughter, Danis Black. Dick enjoyed gardening, fishing, and telling corny Cajun jokes, and was an active member of Foster Road Baptist Church.
