A retired priest of the Diocese of Baton Rouge and a resident of Zachary, he died Monday, March 7, 2011 in Australia, where he was vacationing with friends. He was 75, and a native of New Orleans. Visiting at St. Isidore Catholic Church on Friday, March 25, 2011 from 10am until Mass of Christian Burial at 10am on Saturday, March 26, 2011, celebrated by Bishop Robert Muench. Viewing will be from 10am Friday until 7:30am Saturday, with a vigil wake prayer service at 7pm Friday. Interment to follow in the church cemetery. He is survived by two sons, Geoff Youngs and Charles Youngs and wife Lyz Ginnaven a brother, Donald Youngs and wife Judy a grandson, Ryan Youngs and a granddaughter, Jordan Youngs. Father Fred was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Stanley Joseph Ott on June 9, 1990. He retired on July 1, 2010, after serving for 15 years as pastor of St. Isidore the Farmer Parish near Baker. Prior to that assignment, he had served as pastor of St. Helena Parish in Amite, and briefly as parochial vicar at Immaculate Conception Parish in Denham Springs. Before his seminary formation at Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans, he had been married, and was a professor of history on the faculty of Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. Father Fred was also wellknown throughout the Diocese of Baton Rouge for his role as host of the This Week in Scripture program on the dioceses Catholic Life Television. He also served as spiritual director of the Beginning Experience ministry to singleagain persons, and as chairman of the Priests Retirement Committee. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial donations in Father Freds name to the St. Isidore Debt Reduction Building Fund. Baker Funeral Home has been entrusted to handle the arrangements.
