A resident of New Iberia, and a former longtime resident of Brownsfield, he passed away Friday, August 5, 2011 at Iberia Manor South Nursing Home in New Iberia. He was 95, retired from Cangelosi Devolepments, a native of Lafayette, and a US Navy Veteran of WWII. Visiting at Baker Funeral Home on Monday, August 8, 2011 from 48pm, and on Tuesday, August 9, 2011 from 8:30am until religious services in the chapel at 10am, conducted by Deacon Willie Berthelot. Entombment with military honors to follow in Hillcrest Mausoleum. Survived by six children, Melvin and wife Esther Simon of New Iberia, Gloria and husband Joe Herring of Monticello, MS, James and wife Celeste Simon of Arlington, TX, Pamala and husband Darryl Jarreau of Denham Springs, Laura S. Hurley of Prairieville, and Marie Simon of Euless, TX two sisters, Hazel Bouton and Dorothy Broussard, both of Lafayette two brothers, Turney Simon of Maryville, TN, and Howard Champagne of Lafayette 19 grandchildren, 41 great grandchildren and 23 greatgreatgrandchildren. Preceded in death by wife, Jeanne B. Simon parents, Sidney and Odille Simon brother, Dalfres Simon two sisters, Leah Simon and Doris Thibodeaux and three grandsons, Michael Hill, Gerald Hill, and Joshua Bauer. Sam was a longtime member of the VFW Post 4224 in Baker, where he was the Post Advocate from 198488. He was a member of the Lions Club and was the recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellow Humanitarian Award. He was a longtime volunteer fireman in Brownsfield, where he served as Captain for many years. He was a member of St. Isidore Catholic Church for 50 years before moving out of the area.
